Road To FFCO National Finals feat. Chennai Hunters

Free Fire City Open National Finals are right around the corner. You might have heard all about the pro teams and big names, what their performances were like and what they’re doing to prepare for it. But today, we spoke to one of the underdogs. We sat down with Deadshot from Raven Esports to see what’s going on in their heads. They had a long and arduous journey to get to the National Finals. They started with the Chennai Finals and finished in the top 4. While they did well in the City Play-Ins, their performance started to gain more substance by the time we got to the Play-Ins Finals. They made it through and will be playing in the National Finals next week. Let’s see what they have to tell us about their journey.

  1. Q. Tell us about the history of this team. What has your journey been like?

We started Raven Esports a little more than a year ago. After our team was formed, we played a few small tournaments just to get a groove of things, but our first big tournament was the Free Fire India Championship. Unfortunately, that tournament couldn’t be completed because of the pandemic. To continue our grind, we decided to fight it out in the Free Fire Scrim Wars. We were in Group B. That was a good learning experience. We tried our luck in Free Fire Battle Arena S2, where we tried to explore our aggressive side. A lot of our strategies changed from that tournament onwards. We use to mostly play for placement points, and our strategies revolved around getting to the center of the zone as fast as we could. But now, we have started to fight more frequently, picking up fights whenever we get the chance.

Using all the experience we gathered so far, we entered the Qualcomm Snapdragon Conquest tournament. And now we are playing the Free Fire City Open. We honestly don’t care much about money or fame either, we just enter these tournaments so that we can grind hard and get better.

  1. Q. We are glad to hear that you have a rich competitive history. But how was your team formed? How did you meet your teammates?

At the start of 2020, our guild leader handpicked four players from our guild and told us to start participating in tournaments. Out of those four, only me and Ajith are still playing for the team. Halfway through 2020, RE.SWASTIK joined us, and his contribution has been great to the team.  RE.SHIV joined us after Free Fire Battle Arena Season 2, for the Qualcomm Snapdragon Conquest tournament. After that tournament, we recruited RE.PRASANA. As a five-man roster, we keep switching out our players depending on how in-form they are and the kind of game we want to play.

  1. Q. What were your thoughts after you finished fourth in the City Finals?

We were satisfied that we qualified for the next stage, but we were also very worried. We knew we had the potential for the #1 spot in that lobby, and we missed our chance to go to the National Finals directly. We keep thinking back to some mistakes, reminiscing about what things would have been like if we did things a little differently. But no use crying over spilled milk, now we look ahead.

  1. Q. Did you change anything for the City Play-Ins and Play-In finals?

Yes, we had some changes in the Play-In Finals. We knew that that lobby would be difficult. We were facing the best teams from all the different cities around the country and because only two slots were available. We needed to be more consistent, and only pick up the fights that we knew we had an advantage in. We were calculative, and only engaged in the fights that we were sure we would win.

  1. Q. During the Play-In Finals, you were constantly in the third position. You only overtook Asin Clutchgods at the last moment and came second to qualify. How did you manage to pull that off?

We knew that all teams won’t be consistent all the time. Everybody slips some time or the other. We needed to be more consistent and pick up fights only if we had a significant advantage.

The last match was the decider match. We knew that we needed to get some kills to catch up with the #2 spot. Since it was Kalahari, we knew that we would clash with TSG in their drop location at The Sub. So we planned to split up in pairs of two and take them down first. Then we saw Asin Clutchgods getting eliminated in the kill feed. At that moment, we changed our plan to be more patient and play for placement points instead. The plan worked just how we thought it would. I feel that we would have been successful even if Asin Clutchgods did not get eliminated quickly. That small dash of luck came our way, but we have learned to never rely on luck.

  1. Q. What are your plans for the National Finals?

We are practicing hard for it. We won’t deviate too far away from what we did during the Play-Ins. We will be rotating on time, and picking up kills when we recognize an opportunity. We plan to keep it simple. Unfortunately, we can’t reveal all the surprises just yet, but you will surely be entertained when you see us play.

We are confident that Raven Esports will entertain us all during the National Finals. They will be playing under the banner of Chennai Hunters on 15th August 2021. Cheer for them by watching the matches live on our Free Fire Esports India YouTube Channel at 6 PM IST.
